Why We Train for Point Sparring

At our studio, students begin sparring at orange belt. This sparring is specifically point sparring. That means students have the goal of tagging their opponents with their techniques while using an appropriate amount of contact for their rank. This is not a sport where we are trying to get a submission, a knockout, or seriously hurt our opponent in any way.
In fact, I want to highlight the word “sport.” Like soccer or basketball, point sparring is done for competitive fun. It is essentially a game of tag. It is in no way a realistic demonstration of street self-defense. Sometimes, people may mock it because they don’t realize that, but they are missing the goal of what we are trying to achieve. Point sparring doesn’t teach you how to fight; it teaches you the principles of fighting.
When you have the goal of tagging your opponent, you learn things like speed and distancing. You learn how to weave together combinations of techniques to block and counter. You learn how to occupy space, move along angles, and control where you and your opponent are in relation to one another. There is also the threat of being hit. If you don’t block, you may take a punch to the head or a kick to the chest. Though we are not trying to hurt each other, the possibility of getting injured can be a great motivator when learning how to move and block.
At the end of the day, point sparring is supposed to be fun. It is a way to work on our skills in a competitive and engaging environment. There are elements of self-defense involved, but most importantly, it is a way for students to pressure-test their techniques in a safe and enjoyable way.
