You Can't Drive a Parked Car

You are excited for vacation. You pack your bags and load everything you will need into your car. You put on your shoes, grab your keys and wallet, and get into your vehicle and… you sit there. You go nowhere because you haven’t put the key in the ignition and pressed the gas pedal. Just because you are in the car doesn’t mean you are going to arrive at your destination. If the car is parked, then you’re standing still. You have to actually drive.

A lot of times when we set goals, we have good intentions. We are going to learn to speak a new language, get healthy, or exercise more. But thinking about these goals or saying them aloud doesn’t actually make them true. You can’t drive a parked car. You can’t reach your goals unless you actually put one foot in front of the other and do the work.

Putting in the key is a great first step, and one that should be commended, but it won’t get you to where you need to be. Next time you have a goal you want to achieve, make sure you come up with a plan for how to get there. Just like you may use a map or set a GPS, you need a plan to reach your goals. Don’t just get in the car. Drive.
