Put on Your Costume

Pretend you are an actor. If you are playing a villain, you may incorporate a sinister smile into your performance. If you are playing a doctor, you may wear a white coat and carry a clipboard. The role you play influences how you act.
When you sign up for martial arts, you receive a Do Bok, a martial arts uniform. Just like a military uniform, it signifies a certain standard of behavior. Respect, discipline, focus… all these things are qualities that a martial artist should possess. The uniform is not just a costume we wear, but an outward expression of how martial arts shapes our character.
This Halloween, many students will dress up for the season in all sorts of zany or creepy costumes. But at the end of the night, those outfits will come off and be stored away. A martial arts uniform may be like those outfits in that it looks a little strange or different, but the “act” that goes along with it should be permanent and life-changing.
