Enduring Through Failure

On August 6, 1945, at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time, the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped a uranium gun-type atomic bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy.” It detonated about 1,900 feet above the city of Hiroshima, causing massive casualties and immediate destruction.

Today, the city has been completely rebuilt, but a remnant of its tragic past remains. In the middle of Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park stands the Atomic Dome—a hollowed-out building whose vertical columns somehow allowed it to survive the blast. It was one of the few buildings to do so.

When you look at this structure, you see a piece of the city that survived total annihilation. No one visiting the city in the days following the end of World War II would have expected to see anything left, yet the Atomic Dome endured.

Endurance—the ability to suffer through and outlast hardship—isn’t just something we see in architecture. Life presents us with many challenges that push us to the brink of our abilities. Whether it’s learning new skills in elementary school, experiencing heartbreak in your teenage years, or facing the illness of a loved one in old age, there are moments when we want to give up and throw in the towel.

Endurance is about survival, and survival is not pretty. There are tears, frustrations, and moments when you want to scream and walk away—until someone encourages you to give it another try. We don’t consider someone a failure because they struggle. In martial arts, there are many moments like this: moments when your heart feels like it’s going to beat out of your chest from exhaustion, or when you’ve struck a board as hard as you can and it still won’t break. While our intention is to overcome these frustrations and reach our goals, even if we fall short, the fact that we are still standing at the end is a victory.

When you walk through Hiroshima in 2026 and pass by the Atomic Dome, you don’t see failure. You see a city that survived and grew into something remarkable. Out of terrible tragedy, people endured. We can hope such a tragedy never happens again, but we can also strive to prepare our students to be strong enough to rise up if it ever does.
