Why We Train Weapons

Weapons are synonymous with traditional martial arts. Many students picture themselves wielding a bo staff or nunchucks when thinking about starting their martial arts training. Who wouldn’t want to be one of the real-life Ninja Turtles?

While these weapons could absolutely be used for self-defense, that isn’t necessarily the primary reason we train with them at our studio. Martial arts weapons are treated as extensions of our bodies, and training with them can help reinforce the skills we learn through our empty-hand techniques. When we move our hips in a low block, that same motion could be used to swing a staff toward an opponent’s knees. When we swing nunchucks, our hands move fluidly in much the same way they do when we block and strike. By practicing with weapons, we learn to control our bodies with greater precision, making everything we do in martial arts more effective.

When you practice your weapons forms and techniques, remember the tradition. Remember the practicality. Most importantly, remember that every motion you make should make you stronger, whether or not you are holding a weapon in your hand.

Want to learn traditional martial arts weapons? Our classes include weapons training as part of our regular curriculum at no additional cost. At Trinity Martial Arts, located in Hopewell Junction, we teach traditional martial arts and practical self-defense skills to students throughout East Fishkill and the surrounding Hudson Valley.
