How Do You Brand Yourself?

We live in a world where branding, identity, and messaging matter. When you see the colors bright orange and candy pink, you probably think of Dunkin'. When you think of fast food, that term is practically synonymous with McDonald's. When you think of happiness, family fun, and great vacations, Disney has worked hard to make its brand the first one that comes to mind.

So often, we see people and companies flounder and fail because they say or do something that paints themselves in a bad light. These entities work hard to establish themselves as representatives of their ideals and core principles, whether those values are honesty, equality, health, or family. When something happens that contradicts people's perceptions of these companies, they can quickly fall from public favor.

But let's forget about companies and products for a moment. If someone were to look at you as a person, what would they say are your core values and ideals? Are you someone who is always positive and looks on the bright side of life? Are you the friend who can always be counted on to be supportive, encouraging, and helpful? Do you strive to be honest and fair in all that you do? What are the qualities you identify with and seek to live by every day?

A month or two ago, our staff met to discuss the core values of our studio. They included positivity, quality, integrity, respect, discipline, and love. We know that if we fail to deliver on these promises, not only will people lose respect and trust in our school, but we will also fail to provide the best martial arts instruction possible. Every choice we make as a business, as teachers, and as martial artists must uphold these ideals. Otherwise, we fail to represent ourselves well within the community and diminish our ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

That's how we view core values and ideals through the lens of a business. But what about through the lens of an individual and instructor—someone who is often under the microscope of public opinion? If you were to "brand" yourself, what core values and ideals would you hope to uphold? Take a moment to think about that. Then, make sure you are living up to those principles and practicing what you preach, both in public and behind closed doors.
